Mr. Speaker, as a
follow up to yesterday’s statement on the 2010 Labrador
Winter Games, I rise again today to congratulate the
athletes from the communities of Charlottetown and
Pinsent’s Arm on sharing the win of the Most Spirited
Team award and to recognize several game record
breakers.
Mr. Speaker, the teams from Charlottetown and
Pinsent’s Arm, along with their co-ordinators, Ida
Powell and Matilda Martin, are to be commended for their
enthusiasm and appreciation for these games. They are
certainly instilling a greater sense of pride in people
across Labrador. This kind of overall spirit will be a
huge motivator for our young people to participate
ensuring the continued success of our beloved Winter
Games in Labrador.
I would also like to recognize several individuals
who set new records in various sports. Stephanie Sooley
from Mary’s Harbour set a new record in the Hurdles
event of the Northern Games sport. She completed 130
hurdles breaking the old record of ninety-eight. Sarah
Sooley of Port Hope Simpson also set a new record in the
High Kick event of the Northern Games sport. She kicked
a height of six feet and eight inches, breaking the old
record of six feet and seven inches. Brad Rumbolt of
Mary’s Harbour set a new record in the Labrathon. His
winning time of fourteen minutes and five seconds broke
the old record of fifteen minutes and thirty-six
seconds. Also, a new record set in the gruelling
Northern Triathlon by Rick Kennedy of Happy Valley-Goose
Bay. He beat the old record of forty-seven minutes and
forty-five seconds by over five minutes with a time of
forty-two minutes and three seconds.
Mr. Speaker, I ask all members in this House to join
me in congratulating the athletes and teams from
Charlottetown and Pinsent’s Arm, as well as recognizing
and congratulating the individual Labrador Winter Games
record breakers for 2010.
