I rise in this hon. House today to
recognize Mr. Ephriam Simms of St. Anthony who received
the Governor General’s Commendation, an award presented
to individuals who have acted of great merit in
providing assistance to others in a selfless manner. Mr.
Simms was presented this award during the St. Anthony
Town Council meeting on April 27, 2010.Mr. Simms
displayed remarkable bravery and quick response in
assisting his brother-in-law, Lee, during an unfortunate
accident that occurred in Ontario, September 2008. Lee
was using a pressurized cylinder to spray gas and burn
off dry grass on his property - a technique used by some
farmers to get rid of dead grass. The flame caught his
clothing on fire and the next thing Ephriam knew, Lee
was yelling that he was on fire.
Ephriam’s quick response in removing some of his
clothing helped save his life although Lee still
received third degree burns to his lower body.
Ephriam’s mother-in-law nominated him for that award,
and shows just how thankful the family is that Ephriam
was there to help at the right time.
Mr. Speaker, I ask all members of this House to join
with me today in recognizing Mr. Ephriam Simms on
receiving such an outstanding award. Although he is a
little embarrassed over the attention he has received,
his quick action made a difference that day and his
brother-in-law survived.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
