Premier reinforces stereotypes in national media

Says MHAs are "completely drunk"
February 16, 2004

Bellevue MHA Percy Barrett says comments by Danny Williams in the February 16th issue of MacLean’s Magazine adds to stereotypes of this province which exist in the national media and makes it harder for us to be taken seriously on issues of real importance.

In the two page question and answer feature in Canada’s largest news magazine, Williams laughingly referred to this province’s legislators as "completely drunk." When asked about when he would reopen the House of Assembly Williams also jokingly said "I’m not going to call. We’re not going to bring the House back ever again! It’s just a personal preference. [Laughs]"

"I am personally insulted and shocked that the Premier of this Province would make such comments in the national media," said Barrett. "This interview captured the real Danny Williams with his guard down. He is usually good at keeping up a front but the more he speaks the more we will see the real Danny Williams."

The Liberal MHA says he does not think the remarks were funny and calls them unacceptable. "He should apologize to all members of the House of Assembly and the people of the province for diminishing the importance of the people’s chamber."

Barrett also took issue with other comments made by Premier Williams in the article. "Williams blamed the civil servants for creating a deficit because they received a wage increase and once again overstated the amount of money this province is spending to service the debt. He showed a total lack of respect for the House of Assembly and the role it plays in debating public policy in this province. Maybe he thinks people in this province do not read MacLean’s and he can get away with making comments like this when he is outside the province."
