Andersen says auditorium a greater priority than tunnel
January 13, 2004

Wally Andersen, MHA for Torngat Mountains district and Opposition Labrador Affairs critic, has renewed a call for funding necessary to replace educational facilities in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

"Last summer, the Liberal government made a commitment of $2.4 million towards to cost of building a new 350-seat auditorium for the entire Labrador community," said Anderson. "I have asked the conservative government several times to assure the people in Labrador that this facility will be constructed.

"It is about time we received answers from our elected government in St. John’s. I have called the Ministers involved and made representation that continues to be ignored. A Labrador minister would recognize the need for such a facility following the closure of Goose High School in September. The ability to preserve our cultural heritage and identity is at risk.

Andersen is puzzled that the PC government continues to discuss plans for a tunnel across the Labrador Straits while basic services go unfunded.

"I agree that the idea of linking the two portions of the province is a good idea at some point in the future. It would be imprudent, however, to proceed with these plans while Labrador residents are left without infrastructure enjoyed in most other areas of Canada."
