Structural changes to be discussed at cabinet retreat
January 23, 2004

Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says he expects the Conservative Government to make some major decisions about reorganizing the structure of government at the cabinet retreat in Corner Brook this weekend.

"It is my understanding from sources within the government caucus that cabinet will be discussing changes to the senior civil service and a reorganization of government," said Mr. Grimes. "Some of the senior management will be removed, while others will be moved to new assignments in the coming weeks. There is also some speculation that a number of new people from outside government will be brought into senior management positions."

Mr. Grimes says he is concerned that the Conservative Government is reshaping the civil service in such a way to implement their right wing agenda. "I will be watching the moves they make very closely and checking the background of the people they put in place. I think the importance of doing this analysis was emphasized during the external audit process."

Grimes also says there is already a lot of turmoil within the PC caucus as decisions are being made without their input or consultation and he hopes this meeting will provide more of an opportunity for all ministers to be part of the decision-making process.
