Does Williams government believe in forced amalgamation?
January 23, 2004

Oliver Langdon, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune District and Opposition Critic for Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is once again questioning government’s position on forced amalgamation in the province. Langdon was responding to comments made by PC MHA Shawn Skinner during a VOCM newscast on Friday in which he states that forcing communities to amalgamate should be examined in an effort to achieve cost savings.

"Is Mr. Skinner’s comments a trial balloon to gauge public reaction for the Premier and Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs?," said Mr. Langdon. "Are they planning to move in this direction? Forced amalgamation in the province is not the right approach to municipal co-operation. Municipalities must discuss this option amongst themselves to decide if this is the right approach for their particular circumstances.

"Forcing communities to amalgamate against their will could create animosity and strained relationships between neighbouring towns and cities. I would advise government to think very carefully before unilaterally moving in this direction. If they are planning any policy changes in relation to the way municipal government operates in this province we need to have a full and open discussion before it is announced.

"I would like Minister Byrne to clarify his position on forced amalgamation in light of recent comments made by his caucus colleague. This is an important issue that should not be hidden from the public, especially when discussing the future of their communities."
