Afghanistan Tragedy - Roger Grimes, Leader of the Opposition
January 27, 2004

"Today’s bombing attack in Afghanistan has once again left the people of this province, and the country, in shock and sorrow. The loss of Canadian soldiers is never easy, especially when those people are our family, friends and neighbours. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Corporal Jamie Brendan Murphy of Conception Harbour. I am certain that this is a very difficult time for them as they mourn their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they deal with this tragedy.

"My thoughts are also with the three injured soldiers who are currently recovering at health care facilities in Afghanistan. I wish Corporal Jeremy Gerald Macdonald of Burnt Islands, Lieut. Jason Matthew Feyko of Peterborough, Ontario and Corporal Richard Michael Newman of Heartland, New Brunswick, a speedy and full recovery.

"The people of this province have always served their country in a dignified and honourable manner. Unfortunately, it is tragic events such as this that make us reflect upon the sacrifice that the men and women of our armed forces make on a daily basis. Today’s events serve as a reminder that while we serve in peacekeeping roles, the dangers associated with war zones are always present. While we oftentimes take our soldiers for granted, it is through tragedy that we fully realize their importance."
