Percy Barrett, MHA for Bellevue district and
opposition critic for Labour, is condemning the way in which the Williams
government is treating public servants and pensioners.
"A number of tactics being used by the
Williams government show complete disregard for the collective bargaining
process and our professional work-force," said Barrett. "We cannot
expect public sector workers and pensioners to shoulder the financial or
moral responsibility for the policy choices of this government.
"It is irresponsible for the Premier to
place the burden of the unfunded pension liabilities on retired public
servants who have no way to further supplement their current income. By
making this announcement, the government is unfairly encouraging retired and
current employees to choose which group is more important. Similarly,
discussion surrounding the wage freeze and layoffs is causing internal
problems between junior and senior public servants.
"These tactics may be acceptable to
someone with limited experience in the private sector, but from a government
of the province, you have to show more leadership and take into account what
is good for the entire province. These kind of tactics create turmoil in our
society that are negative for economic and social development. The Premier
should be the number one supporter of government services and the employees
who provide them. He should apologize immediately for treating workers in
this manner."
The Liberal MHA is concerned that decisions
are being made by a small group of advisors to the Premier, leaving elected
officials out of the decision-making process.
"Mr. Williams admitted recently that his
January 5th speech was made after consultation with just a few
close advisors and there was no role for his caucus in that discussion. If
this is any indication of the government this province can expect for the
next four years, I expect to see even more problems within the PC
caucus." |
