Forced amalgamation and regional government on the agenda? What are the Conservative plans for municipal government?
January 9, 2004

Oliver Langdon, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune district and Opposition critic for Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is asking if forced amalgamation and regional government is being planned by the Conservative government as a cost saving measure.

"It is important that we ask some questions about what this government plans in light of the heavy handed approach they are taking to making decisions," says Langdon.

"If they are planning any policy changes in relation to the way municipal government operates in this province we need to have a full and open discussion before it is announced."

The Liberal MHA says mayors and councillors should be very concerned and ask many questions based on the way Premier Williams dealt with unions in relation to announcing a wage freeze. "We are dealing with a Premier that is driven by a right wing agenda and does not seem to consult or listen to anyone, even his own cabinet or caucus."

Langdon says he is also fearful that the Conservative government will try to solve part of the financial deficit by downloading cost cuts to municipalities. "I am wondering will Municipal Operating Grants and Debt Relief Grants be cut resulting in much needed work being postponed. Downloading services and cutting grants to municipalities is not the answer."
