Liberal Opposition predicts tuition increases
January 9, 2004

Opposition education critic Gerry Reid is predicting tuition increases this year for university and college students in this province.

"Unless there is an outcry from students in this province, I expect the Conservative government will cut funding to post secondary institutions as a cost saving measure and force increases in tuition fees."

The Liberal MHA pointed out that such an approach by the Conservatives would be in stark contrast to the approach taken by the previous Liberal Government. "We invested in people and recognized the importance of education for the future of this province. We were lowering tuition fees during our time in office because we believed it was important not just to the individual students involved but for the future of the province."

"I would like to be wrong on this prediction. I would like for the Minister or the Premier to come out and say no you are wrong but given the direction they are heading on other issues I don’t think that will be the case unless students start speaking out," says Reid.

The Liberal education critic says he believes the difference in approach is driven by ideological differences. "As Liberals we believe in creating equality of opportunity and a fairer society whereas this Conservative government does not think those things are important goals for a government."
