Williams' insurance commitment a failure

120 day deadline to exceed a full year
March 4, 2004

George Sweeney, Opposition Government Services and Lands critic and MHA for Carbonear - Harbour Grace, is concerned that government’s own 120 day deadline for insurance reform has passed without any indication of relief for consumers.

"On numerous occasions when I requested information and raised concerns about government being slow to act, they continued to tell consumers to be patient and wait for 120 days to pass," said Sweeney. "This 120 days has now expired and all indications are that we are no closer to insurance reform.

"I call on Minister Whalen to release today any evidence she has that indicates government is willing to act on the insurance file. With the House of Assembly opening for the Spring Session this month, all indications are that legislation is not prepared for implementation, meaning that at least a full year of PC government will pass without introduction of insurance reform legislation."

The Liberal MHA feels that he must once again remind Minister Whalen that consumers are suffering from unnecessarily high insurance rates, especially for automobile, commercial and home-owner policies.

"I still receive calls everyday complaining about unfair rates being offered by insurance companies. The minister must take responsibility for her department and act on this file before consumers are completely overwhelmed."
