Yvonne Jones, Opposition Labrador Affairs Critic and MHA
for Cartwright - L’Anse au Clair district, is calling on Finance Minister
Loyola Sullivan to explain why a double standard exists regarding budgeting
for road work in the province. "The people on
the South Coast of Labrador are still very upset with the decision made in
this spring’s budget to discontinue winter maintenance on the Trans Labrador
Highway," said Jones. "It is a complete slap in the face for us to find out
today that the minister is using his political weight to upgrade and
maintain a cabin road in his own district."
Jones is referring to the recent controversy unveiled
in a news release by Percy Barrett. Barrett released details to the public
about Minister Sullivan announcing the upgrading of a cabin road in his
district. Government announced in their spring budget that funding for
maintenance of these roads was being cut as a measure of fiscal restraint.
"This is a double standard that is simply not fair to
the people of the province. For the finance minister to pick favourites is
irresponsible and raises many questions about other decisions that have been
made since this government took office. Labrador has been the target of many
cuts and it is now obvious many of the cuts were made so that money could be
freed up to do projects in PC districts.
"I have continued to ask the government to re-evaluate
their decisions regarding several Labrador transportation issues to no
avail. First it was the Minister of Transportation using his weight to move
the Bond to Lewisporte and now money taken from maintenance budgets will go
to upgrade and maintain other roads in Tory districts. In light of this
emerging scandal, I now ask the Premier to investigate both issues so a
satisfactory answer can be found for the people of the province." |
