Opposition critic for Human Resources and Employment, Roland Butler, is
calling on government backbenchers to speak out against the reduction of
funds social assistance recipients have for damage deposits. "This policy
change by the Conservative government is hurting some of the most
disadvantaged people in this province and government backbenchers should say
they support this or speak out against it," said Mr. Butler. "I do not
intend to let this issue die and I will continue to pressure the minister
and the premier to have this decision reversed.
"Whether Premier Williams likes it or not, he and his cabinet are the
government now and they have to take responsibility for the decisions which
are being taken. The real issue here is that this decision saves very little
money in the short-term, and it may actually cost more in the long-term
because of the way it creates a cycle of dependency," says Butler
The new government policy which limits damage deposits to $100 for social
assistance recipients for rental accommodations is a result of this Spring’s
budget. As a result of the low damage deposit, some landlords will avoid
renting to social assistance clients. This makes it more difficult to find
acceptable living accommodations for themselves and their families. This new
policy could make it particularly difficult for social assistance recipients
looking for accommodations in the St. John’s area which already has a very
tight rental market.
Butler is calling on PC members, especially those who represent districts
in the St. John’s area where people will be most impacted, to speak out on
this issue. "Where are these MHAs now? Are they being silenced by the
Premier? If they care about these people they should speak out publicly
against the cuts their government is making. I think if they spoke out on
this issue they might have some impact." |
