Liberal MHA shocked and appalled

Double standard on road work not acceptable

August 5th, 2004

Port de Grave Liberal MHA Roland Butler says he is shocked and appalled that Loyola Sullivan would try to impose one standard on the people of the province while having another for friends in his own district.

Butler was commenting on a news release issued by Former Transportation Minister Percy Barrett calling on the Minister of Finance or the Minister of Transportation to explain why road work is being done on a cabin road in Ferryland District while other roads around the province are being ignored.

The road in question is School Road Extension in Tors Cove and the announcement of the work was buried in a news release from the Department of Transportation and Works on June 17th and tenders close on August 10th (The advertisement appears on page D4 of the July 24th Telegram).

Last week Butler commented on road maintenance as one of the ways he believes the policies of the conservative government are devastating rural areas of this province. "I raised concerns that roads that used to be maintained by government are now falling into disrepair and causing people problems. A new government policy was announced in the budget of not doing maintenance on class 4 roads even if the roads are used for agriculture, wood access or cabin owners. When I hear that an exception to this policy is being made in the Minister of Finances’ own district, I want to know exactly what is going on."

"Some people in Conception Bay North are already upset with this new policy and I am sure when they hear about the minister showing favouritism for certain people in his own district, they will be even more upset," says Butler. The MHA was referring to a news story "Cabin owners, farmers kick up dust" which appeared in the July 27th edition of the Compass.
