Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says he is not surprised, but disappointed in
the tone and statements used by Finance Minister Loyola Sullivan on NTV over
the weekend to defend the figures regarding debt repayment in the province.
On Friday, the Opposition Leader issued a press release and provided a
memo obtained through the Freedom of Information Act which confirmed that
the premier misled the people of the province during his state of the
province address in January with respect to debt repayment figures.
"Unfortunately, it seems Minister Sullivan cannot defend his
position on the issue of debt repayment without resorting to personal
attacks," said Mr. Grimes. "I have raised a very legitimate
concern relating to debt repayment figures used by the Premier, and his only
defense was that I was stupid and a liar. Well, I can tell Minister Sullivan
that it will take much worse statements to stop me from raising these
issues.
"I am certain that this minister would love for the Opposition to go
away and not challenge any decision or statement that he makes. Whether he
likes it or not, the people of the province have asked us to do a job on
their behalf. With the way things are currently going, I fully expect we are
going to be very busy ensuring that this government is held accountable.
"If the minister wants to shut me up, he can start by having an open
discussion about the issues and stop misleading the public. I will not play
his gutter politics on these important issues. I will continue to raise
these concerns, especially when I have documentation from the minister’s
own department which show that his comments are misleading."
