Office renovations essential for Williams?
February 5th, 2004

Opposition Leader Roger Grimes, MHA for the District of Exploits, has learned through a freedom of information request that Premier Danny Williams has spent over $10,000 in renovations to his office in Corner Brook.

"In a recent freedom of information request, we asked for a breakdown of renovations to the Premier’s Office in Corner Brook," said Mr. Grimes. "We were shocked to learn that the Premier, during a time of fiscal restraint, spent over $3,500 to paint walls that were done less than five years ago and spent almost $2,000 to replace carpet in an office that the Premier only uses several times a year. We have yet to find out what office equipment or information technology upgrades have been undertaken, and at what cost to the taxpayer.

"Are these upgrades a priority for this government? Mr. Williams has no problem rolling back the salary of pensioners by $5 a month while he enjoys superficial luxuries in his office. I am certain that this is the first of many incidents in which we will see non-essential spending for the Premier and Ministers.

"I have no problem with this government improving their offices and infrastructure. However, when this government claims to lead by example and sends a message of sacrifice to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, is new paint and carpet really a sacrifice?"
