Labour uncertainty causing problems in government operations
February 9th, 2004

Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says the impending restructuring of government departments and shuffle of senior civil servants is causing problems in the operations of government.

"Senior civil servants are unsure of where they will be within the next month or even if they will still be employed with government," said Mr. Grimes. "This kind of uncertainty hanging over the heads of people is not healthy for the operation of government and it is causing decisions to be delayed."

The Liberal Leader says Danny Williams’ inexperience in politics and government operations is really beginning to show. "He does not seem to be able to make decisions or even recognize the implications of his inaction. He has to rectify this issue very quickly by either implementing changes he intends to make or by announcing that there are not going to be changes. Some kind of reasonable stability has to be restored."

Grimes also says he is hearing from sources within the Conservative caucus that some backbenchers and even some cabinet ministers are not happy with the direction that the government is headed. "My sources have told me that both Tom Rideout and Sheila Osborne are not happy with the direction Williams has taken this government. Members of caucus and cabinet are frustrated with the lack of consultation, the right-wing direction of the government and the lack of political astuteness being displayed by Williams."

Grimes says Williams may still be reeling from the political fury he created when he put a displaced Deputy Minister on the Multi Materials Stewardship Board and is now overly cautious about implementing his other planned changes. "This government does not seem to be able to get their act together long enough to do anything right. I can understand someone like Tom Rideout getting frustrated with the kind of inexperience being displayed by Danny Williams."

"What has happened to this government in the last three months is quite amazing. People are now saying this could be a one-term government. We had some very grave concerns about the direction Danny Williams would take this province if he ever formed a government and now our worst fears are being realized. The people of this province are quickly realizing what has happened and I think we should expect more upheaval within the PC caucus."
