What is the status of FPI?

July 13th, 2004

Gerry Reid, MHA for Twillingate-Fogo District and Opposition Education Critic, is asking government to update the people of hte province regarding the possible sale of the marketing and valued added divisions of Fishery Products International (FPI).

Earlier this Spring, reports surfaced that indicated that FPI would be selling their marketing and value added divisions. Premier Danny Williams stated that he was working closely with the company on this file and would advise the people of the province of its status in a timely fashion.

"The Premier stated a couple of months ago that he was on top of this file," said Mr. Reid. "His silence since that time certainly raises questions as to his actual commitment to this file. The people of the province are still waiting to hear from the Premier on what actions he plans to take to ensure that FPI does not sell off these important components of their company.

"FPI is the backbone of many communities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Unlike other companies in the province, FPI is governed by the FPI Act that exists to protect the interests of the people of this province. The marketing and value added divisions represent more than half of the assets of this company. Anything that negatively impacts the profitable aspects of the company will certainly have an impact on the plants and people throughout our province.

"The sale of FPI should not be permitted. Now is the time for government to become directly involved and ensure that the people of the province are the top priority. I ask Premier Danny Williams to stop hiding in his boardroom and come clean with Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. What has his government done to monitor this situation, and what is the status of any potential sale? We need answers from this Premier, not more of his empty promises."
