Sweeney questions dialysis commitment

July 15th, 2004

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is asking Health Minister Elizabeth Marshall to explain why renovations have not begun at the Carbonear Hospital to accommodate a dialysis unit that was supposed to open last spring.

"The minister made a commitment during the winter that this unit would be built and operational sometime later this summer," said Sweeney. "To date, no renovations have taken place at the hospital to accommodate the unit and it is not possible that such renovations could be completed within the time-frame given by the minister. To my knowledge, no engineering work or tenders have been called to commence the planning or construction of the unit.

"I was very proud last year to hold a news conference at the Carbonear Hospital to announce this unit would open in the spring of 2003. I can understand a short delay because these things happen. I do not understand, however, why no work has commenced and no update has been given by the minister."

The Liberal MHA is receiving calls from dialysis patients in the Conception Bay North region who fear the dialysis unit has now fallen victim to government cutbacks. "I have to reiterate to the minister that the need exists for this unit in Carbonear and it must be installed and become operational as soon as possible. The people of this region were promised they would not have to face another hard winter driving to St. John’s to receive this essential treatment.

"The Carbonear Hospital is an essential center that provides many services to a large catchment area. I ask that the minister ensure the dialysis unit proceeds immediately so that other improvements to the hospital can then become a priority."
