Labour climate still tense after strike

Opposition says impacts are long lasting

July 19th, 2004

Percy Barrett, Liberal Opposition critic for Labour and MHA for Bellevue district, says the province is still suffering from some after effects of the largest public sector strike in our history and the legislation government introduced to strip workers contracts.

"I am hearing reports that some employees are still taking a work to rule approach to their jobs. For example I have heard of work slowdowns, refusals to take co-op students, refusals to do overtime work and ironically workers taking more sick leave. The bottom line is that the labour climate within government is still tense after the strike and it will take workers a long time to get over what was done to them," says Barrett.

The Liberal MHA says people feel they are being pushed around and are pushing back in whatever way they can. "The kind of confrontational approach to labour management which this Conservative government took could only lead to these kinds of problems."

Others have also noted that the impact of the strike is still a political issue. Defeated Conservative Member of Parliament Rex Barnes noted that it was a major factor in his defeat in the recent federal election. "When this kind of ideologically driven group of incompetents are in power they will make these kind of mistakes and it is very unfortunate because it is the whole province that suffers when this kind of situation exists."
