George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour
Grace and Opposition Government Services Critic, is wondering what happened
to the Williams government’s commitment to open and accountable government.
"This government pledged to be open, transparent and
accountable to the people of this province when they ran for election last
fall," said Sweeney. "To take the automobile insurance for example, the
Opposition has been asking for information since the House of Assembly was
in Session.
"We asked on several occasions for government to
release details of what directives have been given to the Public Utilities
Board (PUB) regarding insurance reform. Government had indicated the PUB
would undertake further study and analysis of the industry. Unfortunately,
the details of what really is happening is under lock and key. Government
was not transparent in the Legislature last session on this issue.
"Following the House debate, a Freedom of Information
Request was filed on June 4, 2004. The deadline under the Freedom of
Information Act is 30 days from the date of filing and we are now several
weeks past that time period with no response to date. This is a huge
deviation from their promise to be open and accountable."
The Liberal MHA is still wondering why no action has
been taken on Insurance Reform. He believes government continues to stall
because it has realized many of the concerns raised by the Opposition during
debate on Bill 30 are based in fact. "I honestly don’t think they are sure
about where to go from here. They have passed a bill that will not put the
amount of money back into the pockets of consumers as they thought and
insurance companies are also upset and threatening to hurt customers by
leaving the province. It seems that consumers are the main losers from this
plan and government is finally realizing this fact." |
