Kelvin Parsons, MHA for Burgeo - La Poile District and
Opposition Justice Critic, is questioning the decision of the Conservative
government last week to appoint a new consumer advocate to represent
consumers on the Hydro rate file. "The timing of
this appointment is questionable," said Parsons. "Mr. Browne was near
completion of his work on the Hydro General Rate Application and obviously
has the best expertise at this time to complete the work on behalf of
consumers of this province. To rush a decision to appoint a new advocate to
complete this file is an irresponsible use of taxpayers money. I am not
questioning the abilities of Mr. Johnson at this time, but it is obvious
that he will now have to spend time learning a file that Mr. Browne is quite
familiar with already.
"I would like to know what reason government had for
terminating the services of Mr. Browne at this point in time. He has been
the face of consumers on energy related issues for almost ten years and has
done an admirable job. Why do we need a new advocate? Is government
terminating Mr. Browne’s appointment for political reasons?"
The Liberal MHA is very concerned with the precedent
being set with this appointment. The firm Mr. Johnson is associated with is
that of Premier Williams’ brother. "This is not just a conflict of interest,
this is nepotism. The government is clearly in a compromised position by
making this appointment. I am very concerned about where things might be
headed in the future for this government if they are willing to go to such
lengths."
Parsons also believes the wording of the government
news release is indicative of how this administration operates. "To suggest
the consumer advocate acts on behalf of government is irresponsible. The
consumer advocate conducts research, attends hearings and speaks out on
behalf of consumers, not the minister or the government." |
