Sweeney says government mum on auto insurance

Consumers asking when changes will be implemented

July 7th, 2004

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is asking Government Services Minister Diane Whalen to provide an indication of when government’s automobile insurance reforms will be implemented.

"Government pushed through legislative changes to the Automobile Insurance Act in early June as the House of Assembly closed for the Summer break," said Sweeney. "Since that time, we have heard nothing from the minister or the government regarding when these changes might move forward. Consumers are calling my office with continuing problems within the insurance industry. They cannot understand why government made announcements and passed legislation and are still unwilling to act.

"I firmly believe there are substantial savings that could be achieved for consumers if government is willing to pursue other options. Our concerns that were voiced during the debate last month are obviously having an impact on the government since it continues to put off the day of reckoning when it will be proven their insurance reform package is lacking a real positive impact for consumers."

The Williams led PC Party promised during the October 2003 election to implement automobile insurance changes within 120 days of taking office. Reports from Ontario today indicate that a similar 90 day promise by the McGuinty government may stretch into two years before consumers experience savings. "I hope the government here is willing to move forward now. They have the necessary enabling legislation put in place to implement their changes and I urge the government to act now. Consumers deserve a break on automobile insurance rates that are much too high. The 120 day insurance deadline is not the first or the only promise broken by this government."

The Liberal MHA is also looking for information regarding further reviews to be conducted into the insurance industry by the Public Utilities Board (PUB). "We are already into the summer season and no information has been released as to the scope of these studies. After being denied information during question period, the Opposition officially requested information through the Freedom of Information Act on June 4th and still have not received a response from government. This is not a good indication of the type accountability this government will provide over the next three years."
