Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says voters in Bay St. George should be
holding Jim Hodder and Joan Burke to account for not speaking out on issues
of importance to the people in the area. Since being elected, the PC
government has done nothing of significance for the Bay St. George region.
"The local MHA’s have really let the region down. People are in shock from
the first wave of cuts announced by this government and are nervous about
what cuts will be coming next. The local Progressive Conservative members
have been silent willing accomplices to these decisions.
"For example, last fall Jim Hodder told the Georgian newspaper that ‘As
far as Abitibi is concerned, I’m convinced the (hydro) increase is going to
be a body blow to the operation’. However, we have not heard a peep from him
now that hydro has been given permission to hike rates. Has he changed his
position?
"Danny Williams took advantage of concerns about the Stephenville Mill’s
wood supply during last fall’s election campaign. He and his candidates
visited the mill gates and promised a quick resolution to the wood supply
issue. Here we are, nearly ten months later with no answers and no security
for the future.
"The Liberal government invested in Stephenville. Funds were committed
for a new regional hospital over a 10 year period to ensure its
construction. Today, the Williams government wants to decrease services at
the facility less than a year after it officially opened. This is in
addition to the possibility of closing clinics in Doyles, Jefferies, St.
George’s and the Port Au Port Peninsula.
"What is the future of the Provincial College Headquarters now that
government is asking for significant savings from the public college system?
This government has already turned its back on the Stephenville Airport and
Joan Burke has closed Human Resources offices in Stephenville Crossing and
Lourdes. What will be next on this government’s slash and burn agenda?
"Are the people of Bay St. George better off after 10 months of this
right-wing Progressive Conservative government? Voters have every right to
feel let down and misled."
Grimes and the Liberal Caucus are holding meetings on the West Coat over
the weekend. He will be in Stephenville for meetings on Friday morning. |
