More money needed for road work, says Reid
June 15th, 2004

Gerry Reid, MHA for the District of Twillingate-Fogo, says while he is pleased that government has allocated approximately $800,000 for road work in his district, more money is needed to improve road infrastructure in the Twillingate and Fogo areas.

"There are many road projects in Twillingate-Fogo District that need attention," said Mr. Reid. "I am pleased that government has committed funding that will see work begin on the upgrading of a section of Route 340 and the rehabilitation a section of the Shoal Tickle Bridge. I am also very happy that government has decided to fix a tragic section of the Walter B. Elliot Causeway that has been the site of tragic accidents, and remains a very dangerous section of highway in this province.

"While I support the decision to move forward with these projects, government must also realize that there are many more projects in the District of Twillingate-Fogo that require immediate attention. For example, the road from Joe Batt’s Arm to the centre of Fogo Island is in deplorable condition and needs to be upgraded. The remaining section of the main road on Change Islands from the ferry to the town needs to be paved. I ask government to include these repairs in this year’s road program.

"I understand that there are many competing interests in the province for road work. However, we cannot ignore sections of road that require immediate attention. I encourage the minister to visit my district and drive on the roads. I am certain he will then understand my reasons for asking for more funding to complete this necessary work."
