Williams and Conservatives showed true colours during session of House

Liberal Opposition will continue to question government during Summer

June 24, 2004

Roland Butler, MHA for the district of Port de Grave, says the public had an opportunity to see the true colours of Danny Williams and the Conservative Party during the last session of the House of Assembly and the Liberal member is also putting government members on notice that the Liberal Opposition intends to continue to question the government during the Summer months.

"Before the election Danny Williams and the PC party made a lot of promises and now that they are in government they are taking a completely opposite approach. With actions like that, it is no wonder so many people are disillusioned with him and the Conservative Party. People have a right to expect better," says Butler.

"In this past session of the House of Assembly the Conservative Party demonstrated a lack of organization and a heavy handed approach to getting their way. In a democracy the operation of the House is very important. It is important that members have a right to express their views on issues before the House of Assembly. What we witnessed was a group of government MHAs who were ordered by Williams not to speak out on important issues and bullied into voting as a block on issues they should have been free to express their opinion on. Nowhere was this approach more evident than during the debate on legislation which imposed a contract on striking workers and forced concession on them even after they voluntarily returned to work."

The MHA says Liberal Members also brought forward a number of Private Members Motions for debate in the House of Assembly. "There were motions on Health Care, layoffs, increases to ferry fees, Federal-Provincial issues and opposing back to work legislation. I was shocked to see Conservative members who had been endorsed by the electorate such a short time ago come to the House and vote against the interest of the people who had sent them there."

Butler, who is also the Deputy Opposition House Leader, says there are a number of issues which will require attention over the Summer months. "We need to hold this government accountable on issues such as automobile insurance, health care, HRE offices closures, school board reorganization and government layoffs. We will be holding caucus meetings over the Summer to discuss strategy and policy issues and we intend to keep the pressure on this Government to live up to the commitments they made during the provincial election."

Butler says he is very pleased with the performance of Liberal Leader Roger Grimes in the House of Assembly. "In Roger Grimes we have a leader who is holding this current government accountable and presenting alternatives. He has demonstrated his clear understanding of the issues facing this province and this was reflected in the public opinion poll which came out in early June. This Corporate Research Associate Poll shows that if an election were held today the Liberal Party, under the leadership of Roger Grimes, would form a majority government."
