Sweeney demands road repairs

Harvey Street, Harbour Grace in deplorable condition

June 30, 2004

George Sweeney, MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace district, is very upset with road work announcements made by Transportation and Works Minister Tom Rideout.

"On June 17th, the minister sent out a news release announcing road work projects that will be completed in my district this year," said Sweeney. "While I am pleased that a small amount of work will be done in Salmon Cove and Victoria, to my amazement, the minister failed to address the state of disrepair that exists on Harvey Street in Harbour Grace.

"This road is the main road that travels through the community and is barely passable to residents because necessary repairs have not been completed. Once the new highway was opened and heavy traffic redirected to bypass the town, repairs should have been done to the road.

"Government should immediately allocate money to fix the road before more damage is caused to vehicles. As part of the maintenance project, government should enter into an agreement with the Town of Harbour Grace for transfer of the repaired piece of road to the town."

The Liberal MHA believes government is announcing a number of small projects to make it look as if major repairs were being completed this year. "Over the past number of weeks, government has been pumping out news releases concerning road work as if they’re repairing every road in the province. In reality, they’re putting out a news release for every small project in the province and not funding any of the larger projects that need to be done."
