Barrett pleased with Arnold's Cove announcement

Plant to remain open

June 9, 2004

Percy Barrett, MHA for Bellevue District, is pleased with today’s announcement that government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see Icewater Seafoods take over operations at the Arnold’s Cove fish plant.

"This is great news for the workers, families and residents in the Arnold’s Cove area," said Barrett. "In the period since High Liner announced they were pulling out, a tremendous amount of stress and uncertainty has cast a shadow over the lives of everyone involved. I cannot express enough the relief everyone is feeling today.

"I am very proud to say that this area has an unemployment rate that is the lowest in the province and possibly the lowest in the entire country at approximately 2%. The secondary processing of traditional fishing resources and modern oil and gas industries in this region has allowed continued prosperity"

The Liberal MHA believes this agreement is based on the stellar workforce and management team that operates the fish plant. "Bruce Wareham and his team of workers have consistently ensured this plant is among the most efficient and highest quality in the world. This plant was able to survive the cod moratorium and now this pullout because of their hard work and dedication to their jobs."
