Opposition Leader Roger Grimes said the results of the latest poll conducted
by Corporate Research Associates (CRA) shows government should listen to the
people of the province, not ignore their input. The poll interviewed 801
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and was conducted between February 17th
and March 6th, 2004. The polling numbers show a remarkable drop
in support for the Tory government in comparison to the poll that was
conducted four months ago in November. Popularity for the Progressive
Conservative Party has dropped by 16 percentage points, popularity for
Premier Williams has dropped 20 percentage points, and dissatisfaction with
the government has increased by 32 percentage points, from 5 per cent to 37
per cent.
"These polling results demonstrate a significant drop in popularity for
this government and leader," said Mr. Grimes. "The people of this province
are sending a clear message to Premier Williams not to continue his current
agenda of cutbacks and downsizing. It is obvious that a large portion of the
population are not happy with the new approach of Mr. Williams and he should
re-evaluate the direction that he intends to take this province.
"Now is the time for the premier to realize the significance of these
numbers. He has the opportunity to shape the budget into a document that
will help this province grow, not reduce the services that our people use on
a daily basis. I encourage him to listen to the public and move forward with
his much awaited economic development agenda.
"Premier Williams’ popularity is now several percentage points lower than
his party. I encourage the premier to take this as a lesson and begin
consulting and listening to his caucus. A one man approach to government is
not an acceptable way to govern a province. I am certain that his caucus
members have many ideas that could possibly help to shape this province over
the next four years." |
