Other provinces can reform insurance

Williams afraid of lawyers and insurers?
March 10th, 2004

George Sweeney, Opposition Government Services and Lands critic and MHA for Carbonear - Harbour Grace, is wondering why Premier Williams is afraid to move forward with insurance reform.

"The PC Party had a comprehensive plan ready last August. Upon completion of the PUB study, the public was expecting immediate action. It appears that the Premier has gotten cold feet and is delaying any announcements to avoid ruffling any more feathers. His polling numbers are down and the insurance issue is another important policy issue he is afraid to fumble," stated Sweeney.

"Minister Whalen and the Premier have a duty to move forward on this file. The other provinces in Canada have moved forward with reforms yet this government continues to drag its heels."

The Liberal MHA is concerned that no changes will be made to insurance legislation because of pressure being placed on the premier by lawyers and insurance companies.

"The lobbying by insurance companies and the legal community continues to have an impact on government decision-making. The Premier refuses to implement changes because it will negatively impact these groups.

"The Premier is an elected official and constituents should be his primary focus. He cannot protect the legal community or large insurance companies. He must now champion the cause of consumers who cannot afford insurance as it is currently structured."
