Not committed to health care

Government Members stand in House to vote down resolution

March 25th, 2004

Yvonne Jones, Health and Community Services critic and MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, is concerned with the cuts that may come in next week’s budget following a vote in the House of Assembly yesterday.

"I put forth a Private Member’s Resolution which called on government to reaffirm their commitment to the health care system in this province," said Ms. Jones. "One after one, members of the government stood in their places and condemned the motion, speaking repeatedly about the financial situation of the province.

"It is obvious that the government is more concerned about balancing the books than they are about serving the health care needs of the people in this province. The budget will be read next week and unfortunately, many projects that were put on hold will be cancelled."

The Liberal MHA has questioned the Minister of Health and Community Services about the situation on the West Coast and Labrador portions of the province and where it is likely that restructuring will occur.

"The Minister of Health cannot deny the fact that she is looking at closing clinics and removing services from some areas. Several times this week, I have asked questions of the minister on important issues and she continuously failed to address them. This leads me to believe that severe cuts are coming next week and I call on the minister to inform us of her plans immediately."
