Premier should release detailed itinerary

What representation is really being made?

May 11, 2004

Wally Andersen, MHA for Torngat Mountains district and Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs, Transportation and Works, is asking the Premier to provide the people with a detailed itinerary of his travels throughout Europe.

"Last week the Premier announced he was leaving for Europe to visit a trade show in Berlin, Germany to market 5 Wing Goose Bay," said Andersen. "As the days pass, we hear that he also plans to visit Italy, France and Belgium to pursue other issues. I would like to be reassured that the Premier is indeed doing all that he can to make the case for the Base in Goose Bay and I want to know where he is and for what purpose."

The Liberal MHA has been a strong advocate for the Base in Goose Bay over the past number of years. He is puzzled as to why no representative of the committee formed last year was asked to join him in Europe and why Labrador MP Lawrence O’Brien didn’t receive an invitation.

"There are several people who have fought for the Base in Labrador that would have been an asset to the Premier as he travels through Europe. I fail to understand why he would take off on his own to pursue this issue without taking the Labrador MP or other strong advocates along with him.

"I wish the Premier the best of luck and I hope that his trip is successful. However, due to the importance of 5 Wing Goose Bay to the economy of Labrador, I want to be reassured that, in the future, the Premier will have courtesy enough to consult with regional leaders and extend an offer to allow these individuals to help fight beside the Premier for this common cause."
