Eddie Joyce, MHA for the District of Bay of Islands, said
today that the decision to train Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC)
officers at Memorial University’s St. John’s Campus demonstrates that
Justice Minister Tom Marshall was playing politics when stating he was
committed to having the officers trained in Corner Brook.
Minister Marshall stated that he wanted to have the
training program, which was announced in the budget, located in Corner Brook
at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Memorial University has since stated that
this plan was not feasible from the start.
"The Minister’s attempt to take focus off of his
government’s dismal budget was nothing more than a public relations
exercise," said Mr. Joyce. "He decided to use the little bit of positive
news announced in the budget for his own political gain. We now know that
this was nothing more than pure politics in an attempt to inflate the
expectations of the people of Corner Brook and the west coast.
"While Memorial University is trying their best to
avoid making Minister Marshall look foolish for falsely raising expectations
in Corner Brook, I am sympathetic to the staff and students of Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College who looked at this program as a great opportunity to grow
the campus and gain more exposure for their school. This training program
could have brought new opportunities to the Corner Brook region.
"It is obvious that the minister is trying to take the
spotlight off the real issues in the budget that have negatively affected
Corner Brook and the surrounding area. What has the minister said about the
cancellation of the West Coast Exhibition Centre? What happened to his
promise to ensure the expansion to Herdman Collegiate? Does he support the
reduction of Corner Brook’s Municipal Operating Grant by $200,000? When will
money be forthcoming for the MRI for Western Memorial Regional Hospital?
Instead of playing his political games, Minister Marshall should be up front
with the people of Corner Brook and stop misleading them with false
information."
