Parsons says all three parties should work together to get provincial issues addressed during federal election
May 14th, 2004

Opposition House Leader Kelvin Parsons says all three political parties in the House of Assembly should work together to get a commitment from federal candidates and party leaders during the next federal election on issues of concern and priority to Newfoundland and Labrador. Parsons introduced a motion yesterday in the House of Assembly asking that an all party committee be established to draft a policy document on provincial issues for presentation and endorsement by each of the federal political parties.

"Now is the time to work together as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to ensure that we are not ignored once again by Ottawa," said Mr. Parsons. "The establishment of a provincial all party committee to draft a policy document on provincial issues will ensure that each and every federal candidate and party leader is on record as to their support of our issues. Once these issues have been clearly put to the candidates, there will be no mistake as to their level of support for our province.

"There are many issues of concern facing Newfoundland and Labrador. Unfortunately, the response we have received from Ottawa has not been all that favourable. We now need a commitment from the federal political parties that will allow this province to become the principal beneficiary of our offshore resources; we need improvements to the equalization program; we need joint management of our fishery; we need assistance in developing the Lower Churchill; we need a commitment on the future of five wing Goose Bay. These are just some of the issues that need to be addressed by any future federal government.

"This all party committee will provide an opportunity for each of our respective members to put aside political affiliation in an effort to achieve benefits that are in the best interests of the citizens of our province. We often hear many promises from our federal politicians, but usually see little in the way of results. Now is the time for our candidates to ensure their actions speak louder than their words.

"I invite the New Democratic Party under Mr. Harris and the Progressive Conservative Party under Mr. Williams to join with us in furthering this proposal. Given that a federal election is imminent, a timely response is necessary. A united front would be much more effective in dealing with these issues and I am confident that it would produce much greater results after the election."
