Will automobile insurance legislation ever be tabled in the House of Assembly?
May 18th, 2004

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace and Opposition Government Services Critic, is asking the status of automobile insurance legislation. Government House Leader Ed Byrne committed to providing a copy of the legislation to the House of Assembly on Monday, but it was never presented.

"Government committed to bringing automobile insurance legislation forward in a timely fashion at their press conference on March 17th," said Mr. Sweeney. "It is now May 18th, a full two months later and we still have not seen the automobile insurance legislation. Where is this promised legislation and when can consumers expect to see a decrease in their automobile insurance premiums?

"We were told last week in this House that we would have a copy of the legislation on Monday of this week. It is now Tuesday and we still have not seen the legislation. What game is this government trying to play with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador? Are they scared of the backlash by consumers when they present their legislation?

"Now is the time for government to bring forward their legislation. Enough is enough, the people of the province have been promised insurance relief, now is the time to begin the debate."
