Commitment broken on Cartwright community gym

Education minister fails to come through

May 27, 2004

Yvonne Jones, MHA for Cartwright - L’Anse Au Clair District and Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs, is asking Education Minister John Ottenheimer to reconsider his decision not to move forward with a joint partnership to operate the community gym at Cartwright.

"When this gym was built in Cartwright, the Town and the Labrador School Board had an understanding that the facility would operate under a joint ownership to benefit the students and the community," said Jones. "We have since been informed that Minister Ottenheimer has slashed this opportunity as part of the budget cuts announced this Spring.

"This decision will place unnecessary and unexpected financial hardship on the Town of Cartwright. The gym was built based on this understanding and it was intended to provide access for the community and the school. To spring this decision on the town council after the facility has been built is irresponsible."

The Liberal MHA says this decision is indicative of the way the right wing Conservative government has treated Labrador since taking office. "We still have no cabinet representation from Labrador and decisions are being taken without proper consultation and analysis. The cancellation of the gymnasium partnership is another example of this government downloading responsibilities onto those who cannot afford it."
