Transportation Minister in conflict again

Grant should be transferred to Labrador South Coast

May 31, 2004

Yvonne Jones, MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair and Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs, is calling on Transportation and Works Minister Tom Rideout to explain why he provided misleading statements to the House of Assembly last week regarding his constituency office being located in the Lewisporte Ferry Terminal.

"Minister Rideout continues to provide inaccurate information to the House of Assembly and to the public," said Jones. "When questioned last Tuesday on this issue, the Minister refused to confirm his office will be placed in the Ferry Terminal to be renovated using Labrador Transportation Initiative money. Less than a week passes and we find out this in fact is happening. Where is the accountability of this government? How can the minister justify spending money earmarked for Labrador to keep the marine terminal in Lewisporte open?"

The Liberal MHA is calling on government to transfer the economic development grant given to Lewisporte last year to the South Coast of Labrador as compensation for losing the ferry service this year.

"Last year the Lewisporte Chamber was given $150,000 as compensation for losing the ferry service. Now that the decision has been reversed, government should ask that this grant be repaid to government and transferred to the businesses on the South Coast of Labrador who will be impacted by the decisions of the new government.

"If this government is interested in being fair, they will recognize the impact their decisions have had on the South Coast and they will implement a similar economic development grant to soften the blow."
