House should stay open

MHA says Labrador issues forgotten by government

May 4th, 2004

Wally Andersen, MHA for Torngat Mountains District and Opposition Critic for Transportation & Works and Labrador & Aboriginal Affairs, is upset with the decision by the Conservative government to force the House of Assembly shut for a week following the passage of Bill 18 while so many important issues have not yet been debated.

"The public sector strike was a very important issue and it took up most of the time of both government and the opposition for the past month," said Andersen. "I was looking forward this week to refocusing on the many issues that are important to Labradorians.

"The government has shut down the House so that they can avoid public scrutiny on budgetary issues. The deferral of the Mealey Mountain Auditorium in Goose Bay and the North Coast Ferry Service are just two of the hot issues that I intend to keep on the public agenda."

The Liberal MHA is concerned that the government will continue to use the rules of the House of Assembly to stifle debate, ram through legislation and overlook the issues that are of importance to the people of the province.

"They have shown great disrespect for the democratic process since they became the government just six short months ago. The use of closure procedures to end debate, not allowing petitions to be presented and sitting until 2:00am to finish debate are examples of the heavy handed approach used by this government this week.

"I want to put the government on notice that, as a member of the opposition, I will not be stifled by this government and I will continue to stand in the House of Assembly and speak out on issues that are important to people in my district of Torngat Mountains, Labrador in general and the entire province."
