Eddie Joyce, MHA for the District of Bay of Islands, says government’s
decision to close the House of Assembly is nothing more than an attempt to
avoid public scrutiny and is hurting his ability to get answers on issues of
concern for west coast residents. "I am amazed that this government felt
they needed to close the House for a break when there are so many important
issues facing the province," says Mr. Joyce. "On the west coast alone there
are several issues that have not been addressed by this government and
require answers. They make many decisions, but then run and hide rather than
stand up and be held accountable.
"Recent budget announcements regarding the reduction and changes to
school boards and teacher cuts have not been fully addressed. How will these
cuts affect the people of the Bay of Islands and west coast region? Can we
expect a reduction in educational services to our students? Timely questions
that I want to ask this government, but unfortunately they will have to wait
several more days until they decide to re-open the House of Assembly.
"This government would prefer to spend time vacationing after ramming
their punitive back to work legislation through the House, rather than stand
up and answer important questions. Why did they defer the renovations to
Herdman Collegiate high school in Corner Brook after promising to fulfil
this election promise? When will the MRI machine for Western Memorial
Regional Hospital be in service? When will the long-awaited and promised
automobile insurance legislation be brought forward? I continuously try to
get answers to these questions, but unfortunately government does not feel
they have to respond.
"This government has left too many questions unanswered for the people of
the west coast. For them to shut down the House of Assembly for a week with
so much work left to do is absolutely shameful. Elected representatives are
expected to stand in the House and represent their constituents. This
government’s most recent actions show once again that they are going to do
what they like, whether the people of the province like it or not. It is
truly a sign of a Premier and government that do not want to face public
accountability for their actions." |
