Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, says she
has a number of concerns about the delivery of health care in Labrador as a
result of the restructuring being undertaken by government. "I am
particularly concerned that we will see a weakening of the services
currently provided," said Ms. Jones. "What we really need to do is
strengthen what we already have. The Health Labrador Corporation Board of
Directors have already expressed concerns that these services will be eroded
and there will be a centralization of health care services in St. Anthony. I
share their concerns and we need to be vigilant in what happens."
The Liberal MHA says Labrador has a number of challenges in terms of
health care delivery which need to be improved. "The cost of air
transportation for patients requiring medical services outside the region is
a good example of how the situation is different in Labrador. The government
has to offer more services in Labrador or be prepared to improve the travel
subsidies available to those having to travel outside the area."
"I also feel we are starting to make some progress in addressing the poor
social conditions of the aboriginal communities. This is another area where
it is essential we continue to improve services, not downgrade this
investment."
Another issue of concern is the approximately $11 million in debt which
the former board has accumulated and how that will be dealt with. "If the
government does not take some action to address this lingering problem, the
whole restructuring process will be immediately compromised. Services will
likely be impacted if this burden has to be addressed by the new board."
Jones says one way of reassuring the people of Labrador that this
restructuring will not adversely impact health care in their region is to
put in place a board structure that is representative of Labrador. "The
chair and most of the Board should be from Labrador so they are able to
bring the concerns of this area to the hospital administrators." |
