New Education Minister must now stand by comments:  Hedderson called for new school while in opposition

October 14th, 2004

George Sweeney, Liberal MHA for the District of Carbonear - Harbour Grace, says Education Minister Tom Hedderson made a commitment to the people of Carbonear when he was in opposition that he supported the position of parents on school reforms in the region.

"When he was in opposition, Mr. Hedderson attended meetings of the School Council and expressed his concerns with the option being selected," said Sweeney. "Now that Mr. Hedderson is Minister of Education and he has the power to make a difference, I ask that he do the right thing and announce plans to rectify the mess government has made to the education system in Carbonear. Parents are telling me that the situation in the school system is total chaos with students being inconvenienced because of government decisions.

"It makes absolutely no sense for government to pour money into Persalvic, a building that has outlived it’s usefulness, and also bus other students to Harbour Grace. I have maintained all along that a new K-12 school should be built to replace both Davis Elementary and St. Joseph’s. I still maintain that bussing students to Harbour Grace this year was a huge mistake."

The Liberal MHA has raised the concerns of parents and students in the area numerous times over the past year. "I have a clear record on this issue. I have petitioned the old school board, the new board and the Minister with no success. It is unfortunate that our children suffer because government refuses to listen and do the right thing. I now ask that Minister Hedderson who lives in the region, to do the right thing."
