Percy Barrett, MHA for the District of Bellevue, says staff reductions at
Motor Vehicle Registration have already created major problems in the
province related to vehicle renewals and now people are having to deal with
their driver’s licences being suspended due to the backlog of mail waiting
to be processed by fewer staff. "Today, I received a notice that my
driver’s licence will be suspended at the end of this week due to my
apparent failure to provide medical information to Motor Vehicle
Registration," said Mr. Barrett. "The unfortunate circumstance is that this
medical information was sent to Motor Vehicle Registration in July and is
still unprocessed. If I received this notice today, how many other people
have also had their licences suspended? Many seniors have to complete annual
medical exams and send the results to Motor Vehicle Registration. How many
seniors have been affected?
"In a letter sent from the Department of Government Services, it advised
me to call Motor Vehicle Registration. Unfortunately, the numbers provided
are no longer in service. It is apparent that this government is in chaos
and their staffing cuts are having a major impact on the provision of
services in this province.
"I have spoken to staff members at Motor Vehicle Registration who
indicate that government’s unwillingness to replace workers on leave, and
the reduction in student positions this summer, are the main reasons that this
work is not being completed. Staff are working long hours to clear up this
backlog, but still feel that there are not enough people working to process
the number inquiries and mail that has been received.
"I call upon government to immediately fix this problem. I wish to
continue driving my vehicle this weekend without having to worry about an
unjustified suspension of my licence. I am sure I am not the only individual
going through this circumstance and I expect the minister to come forward
and explain how she plans to fix this major problem. It is apparent that
government’s excuses for these delays is no longer acceptable. People’s
lives are being directly impacted and now is time for the minister to act." |
