Premier failed once

Time is now for Labrador cabinet appointment

September 29th, 2004

Wally Andersen, MHA for Torngat Mountains district and Opposition Transportation, Works, and Labrador Affairs Critic, says the resignation of Elizabeth Marshall provides Premier Danny Williams an opportunity to appoint a cabinet representative for Labrador.

"Following the resignation of Elizabeth Marshall, the premier will be shuffling his cabinet sometime in the near future," said Andersen. "I think it is only fair that Labrador be now considered for a cabinet post. It is not fair that people in Labrador are forced to have their issues shared by two ministers who have other important responsibilities.

"The premier recently traveled to the north coast to see first hand some of the issues that exist in my district of Torngat Mountains. I have written the Prime Minister concerning these issues and I feel that by having a Minister from Labrador, I may be more successful in petitioning Mr. Martin for his time and resources. I have devoted my entire life to furthering the future of the children and all people in Labrador and believe others share my passion."

Andersen believes we have reached a point in time where having an effective minister responsible for only Labrador issues could make a real difference. "The situation at 5 Wing Goose Bay, the Lower Churchill development, handling social issues on the north coast, transportation concerns and other issues are very important to the people of Labrador and we have felt under-represented within the provincial cabinet since last November.

"As a former minister, I know how issues can often be left by the wayside when a minister has dual responsibilities. It is now time for the premier to do the right thing and appoint a minister to push Labrador interests."
