Need for job creation says opposition

Government unable to help rural economy in first year

September 29th, 2004

Following a Liberal caucus meeting in St. John’s Monday, Port de Grave MHA Roland Butler says his caucus feels there is a real need for a job creation program in the province this Fall.

"During the discussion around the caucus table this morning, several members voiced concerns about the lack of an economic development program by the Williams government," said Butler. "Many people, especially in rural areas, have been unable to secure the employment necessary to qualify for Employment Insurance benefits.

"It is the time of year when government must step in to assist these people with job creation programs so their families can be financially secure during the hard Winter months. Seasonal employment is unpredictable at times and it is my understanding that many fish plant workers and other seasonal workers were unable to get enough weeks of work this summer."

Butler says the continued need for job creation is evidence the Williams government is not delivering the kind of economic growth they promised during last Fall’s election. "This government came to office promising a better future for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. People in the province thought they were electing a government that would focus on economic development, creating a sustainable economy and plan for long term prosperity for rural communities.

"Instead, the public has had to endure job cuts, service reductions and increases in the cost of many government services. The net effect has been a slow-down in the economy and the need for short-term job creation projects. The government has been completely focused on deficit reduction and has forgotten that people are in need. What is needed is a more balanced approach."
