Anna Thistle, Opposition Finance Critic and MHA for Grand
Falls - Buchans district, says recent home heating fuel price increases are
going to cause hardship for people over the Winter months and government
should act now to implement a permanent home heating rebate program as they
promised. "I have asked several times since last
Fall for the Minister of Finance to come out and support such a program,"
said Ms. Thistle. "Back in March, he stated there was no need for a rebate
last Winter because prices had eased. Now that prices have soared and are
expected to remain high for an extended period, I ask that he take another
look at implementing a program for those in need.
"The minister obviously remembers his comments in the
House of Assembly supporting such a program when he was in opposition and
page 11 of the Blue Book states the PC commitment help people cope with
heating costs. The Blue Book promised that a special needs assistance
program would be put in place to provide $250 rebates to assist with home
heating costs for low income earners. I’m not sure what this government is
waiting for. Seniors and low income earners are going to be suffering while
the government continues to stall on this issue."
The Liberal MHA points to clear public support as
another reason why the government should move towards a permanent home
heating rebate program. "People are very concerned about what these
increases might mean for heating fuel this Winter and electricity rates in
the longer term. They have called for a heating rebate program and a cut in
taxes on home heating fuel so they can afford to heat their homes and put
food on the table.
"This is an important issue, the minister must end his
silence and show leadership. This is an opportunity for this government to
show they do have a social conscience." |
