Replacement airstrip operator needed in Hopedale

Government needs to understand situation

September 9th, 2004

Wally Andersen, MHA for Torngat Mountains district and opposition Transportation, Works, and Labrador Affairs critic, is calling on Transportation and Works Minister Tom Rideout to fill a vacant position at the Hopedale airstrip.

"As we approach the time of the year in Labrador when the weather can be unpredictable, it is essential that this position be filled for the health and safety of the people of this community," said Andersen. "During the month of September it is not uncommon to have a snowstorm on the North Coast.

"It is essential that the gravel airstrip in Hopedale be available for use in the case of an emergency. Without the airstrip operator in place, the airstrip may not be safe to accommodate aircraft. Emergency situations can arise at anytime and it is essential that this position be filled immediately."

Andersen says he does not understand why the position has been left vacant since earlier this summer. "I would like for the minister to act now to fill this position. It puzzles me why the position was not previously filled because there are qualified individuals living on the coast and in Hopedale. I am sure that if the job were posted, a replacement candidate would be found immediately."
