Joyce calling on Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and C.E.P. to renew negotiations

August 25, 2005

Eddie Joyce, MHA for the District of Bay of Islands, is encouraging both Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited and the Communications, Energy and Paper Workers Union to return to face to face negotiations at the bargaining table in an effort to end the current work stoppage at the Corner Brook mill operation.

"Any work stoppages at the mill in Corner Brook will have a significant impact on the economy of the city and the surrounding communities," said Mr. Joyce. "It is of vital importance that both sides return to the bargaining table and reach a new collective agreement as soon as possible. A prolonged work stoppage will negatively impact the entire region, including the mill and its workers.

"There appears to be a willingness on both sides to sit down in an effort to reach an agreement. This strike needs to be settled and I hope the mill management and the union leadership will agree to head back to the bargaining table in the very near future. It is in the best interests of everyone involved to get a timely resolution to this labour situation."
