Is Minister Byrne stretched too thin or did he fall asleep at the wheel?

February 24, 2005

Eddie Joyce, Opposition Agriculture critic and MHA for the District of Bay of Islands, says he was shocked with the recent announcement by the federal government that they will be closing their cold weather center for agricultural research. Joyce was also disappointed to learn that Natural Resources Minister Ed Byrne knew nothing about the decision.

"It is very disturbing that the federal government moved forward with a decision to close a facility that was of great benefit to the agricultural industry in the province," said Mr. Joyce. "Researching and refining methods for use in growing our agricultural potential has been ongoing in this province for years. It is unfortunate that this negative decision was taken at this time.

"I am also very concerned that Natural Resources Minister Ed Byrne knew nothing of this decision. It begs the question, where is the minister on this file? Government recently stated they were moving forward with a strategic plan on growing the agricultural industry in this province. It is difficult to understand how this could have happened without the minister’s knowledge.

"Minister Byrne either fell asleep at the wheel, or the size and scope of this department does not allow him to remain on top of all of the important files under his authority. Are agricultural and forestry issues getting the attention it deserves from a minister who has to juggle responsibility for Mines, Energy, Forestry, Agriculture, as well as duties associated with House Leader?

"Whatever the situation, we have an announcement from the federal government that will be a setback for farmers in this province. The province must now develop a plan that will protect this important facility for the agriculture industry in the province. If we are to strengthen and grow this industry, we must have these facilities available for usage."
