Parsons calls for investigation into David Nagle case

July 13, 2005

Kelvin Parsons, Opposition Justice Critic and MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile, says the dismissal of David Nagle, the man accused of assaulting the Premier’s son last year, and allegations of potential influence and interference in the justice system are of concern. Parsons is calling upon Attorney General Tom Marshall to initiate an investigation to ensure there was no wrongdoing in this case.

"There have been allegations made by Mr. Nagle’s lawyer that the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Premier’s Office may have influenced the investigation of this assault," said Mr. Parsons. "Today’s dismissal due to lack of evidence raises the question as to whether this case should have even gone to court.

"I am calling upon the Attorney General to initiate an investigation to ensure there was no interference from politicians or high ranking police officials in this case. Mr. Nagle’s defense counsel has stated that this case received more police attention than incidents of a similar nature and that additional pressure may have been applied on investigating officers to have charges laid quickly. It is of the utmost importance to ensure that the integrity of our justice system is maintained and these allegations of interference are investigated.

"Serious allegations of this nature cannot be overlooked or go unchallenged by our justice system. An investigation needs to take place to ensure that all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have faith that every person that uses the justice system in this province is treated in a fair and equitable manner."
