Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says government should examine the possibility
of creating a rebate program to offset the increasing price of electricity
for low income families and seniors.
Yesterday, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) announced a electrical rate
increase of 5.2 per cent to take effect July 1st. This increase
is in addition to the ten per cent rate increase that was implemented last
year.
"While the high price of oil may be driving this most recent rate
increase, government has a moral responsibility to ensure that low income
earners and seniors do not suffer from these increases," said Mr. Reid.
"Government has established rebate programs over the past few years to
assist low income earners who heat their homes with oil. I believe
government should now seriously consider putting together a rebate program
that will help people deal with the increasing cost of electrical heat in
their homes.
"While these increased costs may not immediately be noticed, this is the
perfect time for government to develop a rebate program before the colder
fall and winter weather sets in. This would be a proactive move by
government to ensure that the poorest people of our province do not have to
suffer.
"Low income earners and seniors struggle to make ends meet throughout the
year. This impact is felt much more during the winter months when
electricity costs increase dramatically. This latest increase may force low
income earners and senior citizens to choose between heat and the amount of
groceries they buy. This is not acceptable and should be addressed.
"I encourage government to evaluate the impact these latest rate
increases will have on the people of the province. As demonstrated by this
latest increase, the price of oil and electricity are directly related.
Government is making increased profits from offshore oil royalties and will
receive more money from the HST portion of these increased electricity
rates. I am hopeful that Minister Sullivan and Minister Byrne will do the
right thing, develop a rebate program and protect the most vulnerable people
in our province from these rising costs."
